The Word

Food for the Soul

Deuteronomy 8:3

And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

Jesus repeated this when he spoke to Satan when Satan was tempting him in the wilderness.

Matthew 4

4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Bread alone is not sufficient for men or women. We need the word of God continually. We need to desire it above food. This is one reason for fasting and prayer. Fasting puts food on the back burner and gets our minds centered on the Lord. The word is spiritual food that feeds the soul just as physical food feeds the body. Without it we die spiritually.

Job 23:12

Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

Here is another instance where the word of God is esteemed greater than necessary food. When I hear of many in other countries stand outside in the rain, travel for miles and wait in line to hear the word of God I am amazed. That is how we should feel about the word. We sometimes get fidgety if a preacher preaches more than a half-hour. Oh how we need to hunger after the word of God.

Psalms 119:103

How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

David was a lover of the word. He esteemed them sweeter than honey.

Jeremiah 15:16

Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.

To Jeremiah the word brought great joy. How many of us would rejoice if we won a large sum of money? The word should bring us greater joy than that.

Ezekiel 2:8

But thou, son of man, hear what I say unto thee; Be not thou rebellious like that rebellious house: open thy mouth, and eat that I give thee.

To one who delights in the word, he will never feel empty and disappointed.

Ezekiel 3

1 Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel.

2 So I opened my mouth, and he caused me to eat that roll.

3 And he said unto me, Son of man, cause thy belly to eat, and fill thy bowels with this roll that I give thee. Then did I eat it; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.

1 Peter 2

2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

The word should be desired and sought after. He who hungers and thirsts after righteousness will be filled.

This is not something just for a chosen few but for all that seek. We do not have to be empty, depressed and full of negative thoughts. We can overcome by seeking and being filled with the word of God. We can be filled with God's Spirit. Let the living water and the word of God fill your soul this day.
